I didn't really pay much attention to birds until recently, too. I found the Cornell Bird ID app to be really helpful. It asks you a few simple questions and then shows photos/audio of birds that are possible matches. It helped me identify the grey catbird and chipping sparrow, along with others. You can also search for a bird if you just want to learn more about it.
Cornell also has some great pages about getting started "birding." I just discovered these a few days ago.
Here's a cute little guy to encourage you as you explore the birds in your neighborhood. He's a bluebird :)
