Sparrow

I got caught up in a little adventure today. There was a small, fluffy bird in the driveway when I pulled in today. He didn't fly away when I parked, so that told me something was wrong. Thanks for posting this little story! I've been getting more interested in the birds in my neighborhood, but I don't know a lot and didn't grow up with anyone knowledgable about birds. How would you suggest learning more? Your parents and neighbor (and you) all seem to be pretty aware of nature. That's really cool!

Hi Oliver :)

I didn't really pay much attention to birds until recently, too. I found the Cornell Bird ID app to be really helpful. It asks you a few simple questions and then shows photos/audio of birds that are possible matches. It helped me identify the grey catbird and chipping sparrow, along with others. You can also search for a bird if you just want to learn more about it.

Cornell also has some great pages about getting started "birding." I just discovered these a few days ago.

Here's a cute little guy to encourage you as you explore the birds in your neighborhood. He's a bluebird :)
