How are you?

"How are you?" someone asks.

Picture a math problem. It asks for a summation of many numbers. At the bottom is a blank cell for the answer and scattered across the paper are various numbers. Explaining's such a pain sometimes. I used to get stuck with a variation of this, "How have you been doing?" and "What have you been up to?" Sometimes a response to the literal question doesn't provide an appropriate answer, so I have to pretend to answer a different, maybe more enjoyable question.
