I sat with this nice guy named Joe. (Steve's cousin) Steve was very busy being social with "his people."

It was actually the other way around...
Joe didn't know I was coming so as far as he knew he was going to be sitting by himself if I wasn't there.
He was entertaining company though, Steve bought us Del's, and it was a fun evening so I really can't complain.
