The Worst Christmas Songs Ever

Dec 20, 2006 11:45

A few days ago, Michael Covington posted a note with a list of what he considered the worst Christmas songs ever. I'd like to add a few entries to the list while I have a spare moment here:

I haven't heard the song, but Kylie Minogue is rather popular with the hip, in, with-it crowd (/end sarcasm).

Actually, she's an Australian singer with several big US hits, and she's stunningly good-looking.

She certainly is good looking, but I would suggest that she needs much better material.

And now that you mention the looks issue, are there any homely female singers who have had any popularity at all?

Successful homely singers? Not unless you sing opera.

Her teeth scare me. o_o

I keep waiting for her to bite the camera lens off or something.

On a more serious note, I'm kind of surprised nobody has mentioned Christmas Reindeer by a group called The Knife. It's sort of an electro-clash Christmas tune. Really weird, and most people I know don't like it much. Still, I very much like their style.

Santa Baby and An Alternative anonymous December 20 2006, 20:40:18 UTC
Jeff -
Santa Baby was originally recorded by Eartha Kitt in 1953(!). See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Baby

For some really good Christmas Music, try "A Festival of Carols in Brass" by the Philadelphia Brass Ensemble (actually some of the brass players from the Phila. Orchestra at the time). If that doesn't improve your Christmas Spirit, you're seriously Scrooged.

Merry Christmas!

Most of my favorite Christmas music is instrumental, and I'll try and chase that one down. My Christmas spirit is actually pretty good when I'm not listening to spoiled-brat celebrities doing crappy covers of songs that were shaky when they were new and novel.

The first recording of "Santa Baby" was Eartha Kitt in 1953. It's a cute novelty song. I can't bring Minougue's version to mind, but Madonna's version tries too hard to be cute and comes across a little sleazy.
Maybe it was cuter in the somewhat less crass and commercial '50s.
Maybe Kitt was a better performer.
I like it when it isn't done to death.

Living as you are in a third-world country with no culture, I'll forgive you not knowing (and loving) "our" Kylie, the singing budgie. Your dedication to your wife is such that I imagine you can't be swayed by the most famous shiny-hotpants-clad bottom in the Antipodes, and apart from that she has very little to recommend her (although that's plenty).

The song I hate most is that one about the disabled sentient lifeform who is ostracised by his supposed peergroup right up until the moment his boss decides to use his disability to benefit the corporation, after which he is suddenly "loved" and accepted. An appalling tale of hypocrisy and endemic abuse and a tragic indictment on society. Thankfully, I never listen to commercial radio so I'm only subjected to it while I'm Christmas shopping, which I've finished doing.

Baroque is pop (the best Christmas Songs Ever). anonymous December 21 2006, 06:24:00 UTC
Jeff have you tried Baroque music. The best composers Bach, Handel etc. are the composers of the era. It is pure music not a sound blanket, like the "noise" from era of Romanticism. Maybe i'm just an old fart, but
Baroque music swings whether it be Christmas or
Easter.
