Masks as Inadvertent Variolation

Yesterday's post on the effectiveness of masks reminded me of something I had taken notes on over a year ago: masks as variolation. The insight wasn't original to me, but alas, I don't recall where I first saw it.

Covid-19 Deaths Counts anonymous August 8 2021, 17:13:39 UTC
I have not seen anything anywhere if the number of deaths in 2020 was higher or lower then the average.

What is the average number of deaths from the flu versus Covid in 2020 for a normal year?

I have heard of wanting deaths reported as Covid (even though that was not the case) because of insurance payments.

This is a gnarly issue. From what I've read, "excess deaths" in 2020 were pretty much what they always are. (This may be worth a whole entry all by itself.) I'll see if I can find the actual numbers again. I've read them and will post some here as time allows.

I've also heard that healthcare providers get a higher payment for reporting a death as "from COVID" even if the patient was dying of cancer--or died in a car accident. That's another vexing issue, and one you won't read much about in the media. My rule-of-thumb is that 10% - 15% of deaths attributed to COVID because of a positive test on the corpse actually died of something else. So was it COVID or cancer? That's a hard question. I'm not sure what's to be done to make it right.
