I'm here at ConQuest in Kansas City. We had a standing-room only panel on the Hugos. Nobody, and I mean nobody, including the executive producer of the SP-supported Adventures in SciFi Publishing podcast, had any nice words to say about the Sad Puppies or the kerfluffle in general. In fact, "Adventures" although accepting this year's nomination, will be announcing a policy to decline any slate-driven nomination going forward.
Unless one defines "Insider Alpha" as "everybody who goes to a con" saying that this is " really about humiliation and loss of face" is just flat wrong.
In any event, the potential voting pool is up to 9,000. We'll see come August who has the numbers.
C'mon, now you're just being obtuse. You know full well that some people swing more weight in fandom than others, and that Certain People swing a great deal of weight. This has been true for the four decades I've been a part of it, and it's still true. I've seen a great many fannish arguments triggered by loss of face. The current argument stands out in some respects because it's about who gets prestige and how. Alphas prefer to control who gets prestige because prestige bestowed outside their control threatens their status. Ultimately and alas, it's about a tribe that was humiliated by a relative handful of medium-status people. The psychology is pretty clear to me.
As for the rest, yup, we'll see. But I think that the Puppies have already made their point.
Ok, there is growing attitude in American life today. It reflected here but also in politics in specific and lots of life in general. People, on ANY side of an issue, are taking the stand that if you disagree with me, and think differently than me you are not just wrong, YOU ARE EVIL.
This is part of that. I choose to ignore it. I frankly haven't nominated for the Hugos in years and stopped voting about 8 years ago when I stopped having the time and attention to read fiction. It has not cost me any money, time or stomach lining. It has cost WSFS my membership fees and $300 in dealers table fees, etc. The screamers (of whatever faction are irrelevant to real life.
In summary, If we don't clap, Tinkerbell will just shut up and die.

And then some.
This year's awards ceremony should be grim. I may go to Sasquan just to see it.
