Odd Lots

  • Here is the entire sky projected on a plane, and zoomable. (LINK REMOVED--SEE COMMENTS) That doesn't do it anything like justice. Cruise the image a little and gasp. (Give the site time to refresh; it's newly slashdotted.) Read the rest of the page too--it's fascinating, and full of great photos. Chile looks a great deal like Mars in some places.

The link on the first item starts with:
http://www.sergebrunier.com.nyud.net/
A few years back this sort thing was used by nasty folks to make the unsuspecting think they were visiting sergebrunier.com while actually sending them somewhere else entirely. I still would not go to such a link IF I SAW IT FIRST.

There was some controversy over this item that turned up in the Slashdot comments, and I may yank the link out of that same concern. The original link to sergebrunier.com is now refusing to serve the page, and I can't don't understand what's going on. I'll leave the text of the item in place, but people reading this entry, please note that Something Funny Is Going On Here. More once I figure it out.

Now http://sergebrunier.com/galerie.html works, wonderfully. Maybe it was a monthly quota issue?

Pro tip: Sony Reader uses the exact same charger as the Sony PSP. A charger was no further than the nearest Target or WalMart.

Heh. Thanks for letting me know. I bought a new one online, and it wasn't horribly expensive, but in truth there's no need for devices like this to have external power supplies when flip-down prongs can be done so easily.

Doesn't that mean the power conversion hardware has to be in the device, and carried around all the time?

I think our best bet for a universal charging station for all our little widgets and gizmos is a power-only USB connection.

There's a Canadian version of the Pirate Party as well. Currently I am working on helping get it registered as an official party.

It's a mistake to consider copyright issues just a European thing, but the proportional representation system in Europe makes it much easier for such parties to get elected. In Canada, the first-past-the-post system means little chance of ever electing a candidate, but the unusual name of the party will at least draw attention to the cause in any election.

And I would put Pirate Parties on the left as their stance on copyright is essentially about socializing ownership of information. Civil liberties and privacy has generally been an issue of the left as well, but even left wing governments are building surveillance societies as fast as right wing ones these days. Just look at the UK,
