Two years ago, I discovered PowerLine networking and have used it ever since, first to cover a CAT5E "dead spot" in my Colorado house, and more recently to finesse Wi-Fi outages at Carol's sister's house. One problem that affects at least some (and probably all) powerline networking is that they will not sync across different phases.

I've used both Netgear and Devolo versions around the hospital for short-term connectivity and neither will work across phases - not too surprising, really, bearing in mind the frequencies involved. The signal will not, however, get through an electricity company meter, so the relatively weak security is less of an issue.

We use MCBs (magnetic circuit breakers) around the house and the signal seems to get through those OK.

Oddly, the new 200Mbit/sec widgets seem more robust in terms of range and interference.
