Whew. I just saved out and backed up the final PDFs for Carl & Jerry Volume 4. Did the whole thing from a dead stop (including scanning all 24 stories out of the old magazines) in fifteen days flat. Statisticians talk about "strong" and "weak" correlation - or, what percentage of the measured change of the data can be accounted for by the assumed causative factor. This is missed by many of our statistically-ignorant types.

The other important thing that happened in 1973 that, as suggested by the authors of Freakanomics, does pass more rigorous testing, is Roe vs Wade. The result of that decision is that a great many unwanted children (not surprisingly, a common trait among criminals) was never born, and we are in what would have been the prime time of their criminally active lives. They also acknowledge that, if true, this is a morally complicated issue, to be sure.
