I've been reading Ellison for years, but I have to say that his philosophy is painfully evident in some of his stories. There have been more than a few that should have been held back for further consideration, rewrites, or even termination.

I've made some attempts myself, at the writing of stories (never summoned the courage to attempt a novel), but have not achieved anything I felt worthy of reading by others. Part of the problem for me has always been that I see the need for rewrites, but there are few things I find as painful as rewriting my own prose. Actually, it's not the rewriting, but the rereading. At any event, I have tremendous admiration and respect for anyone who can tough it out.

My copies of Starwind from back at Ohio St are getting a little brittle, thanks for putting this out.

Starwind copy... rkhalloran August 31 2007, 15:15:57 UTC
Saw the notice at the top of the story; let me dig around and find my copies of Starwind and I'll shoot you a copy of the pages. FYI, it's earlier than you note in the story, Jeff; I graduated in '77 and it published while I was there.

Huh. I was certain it was '81. I'm not sure I knew Susanna West in '77, and it was she who asked me for the story. But hey, the actual printed copy trumps my (increasingly erratic) memory. Many thanks if you can get it out to me!

Once I find it, would you prefer hardcopy by USPS, or 600 dpi scans e-mailed? Let me know.
