I'm reminded of RuPaul's motto: "What other people think of me is none of my business." If you care about your grades, that's great! Don't let people make you feel guilty about wanting to do well. Since in this case it's something positive like grades that can actually have an impact on your future education as well as your personal pride/confidence, ignore these people's attempts to get you to sabotage yourself. Don't kill yourself trying to get there, become depressed if you don't meet your own expectations, or sacrifice too much in your life because of studying, that's all.

everyone said grades didn't matter at my grad school, but they are all pissed when I got my Psi Chi membership. free inauguration spaghetti dinner, fools!
