My Skin Color Has Been Discontinued

Dec 22, 2009 15:23

I usually don't wear make up. Maybe I'm too lazy. I'm not bad at applying it, most people can't even tell I'm wearing any when I am, if I am. But since we're visiting Ken's family over the holidays and taking family photos, I realized I would actually need to buy make-up. And not the nice $40 a bottle of Shiseido makeup I used to be able to ( Read more... )

I may be an oversensitive white person but "Nude" is just a bullshit name. I understand they're trying not to draw embarrassing attention to the pallor of their customers, especially the parts of them that never get suntanned, but really, can we find something else? I propose these helpful alternatives for the easily-upset Caucasian majority:

English Cream
French Bisque
Egg Noodle
Olive Oil
Russian Potato Vodka
Ginger Cookie (for redheads, with SPF 100 automatically included in the formula)

My current concealer is called Ivory, which it isn't and neither am I. Pre-Melanoma Beige is more like it. Hardly an aspirational name, I suppose....

Meanwhile, there's a Shiseido counter at the Mitsuwa market on Centinela at Venice.

Yay! Although I was hoping to buy $10 make up instead of $40 make up...I wish Shiseido had a cheapy-cheapy line.

I totally agree that red-heads are also screwed in the make-up department, especially if they have freckles.

I agree that the nomenclature is lame. I have a sick sense of humor and would totally buy a make up color called "Fortune Cookie."

My original color names were a good deal less... diplomatic... so I'm behind you on the sick sense of humor. But then I buy makeup so infrequently that it doesn't matter if I'd buy foundation in, say, "Guera."

Unfortunately frequent visits to makup/beauty stores thanks to marla has taught me that they all carry full ranges of products for varieties of 'ethnic' skin tones. Basically, go to Century City.

But I mean like, drug store $10 kinds.

Maybe I should ask Marla for makeup advice when she gets back. When armed with all of the tools I'm pretty good at applying it. I just don't know where to find the right stuff.

Most of the makeup that costs too much at those stores you can later buy online for less, after you've tried them for a while and decided that you like them. While Marla will probably come back to LA at some point for a while, she's probably going to spend less time back than even me. I would just ask the ladies at those places, they are pretty dedicated to getting the right beauty product for the right person, at their price range too. They always tried to sell me stuff at those awful places. I think they must genuinely enjoy their jobs.

I still don't buy your "can't afford it" excuse. Your rent is even less than mine, for one. Splurge on some makeup if it's what works.

hey-

yeah, saul us right sephora has great foundation for all skin tones.

what i would suggest is buy the products like eyeliner/eyeshadow/lipgloss at CVS or a place like that, and buy the foundation/concealer/blush at a store like sephora or macy's because the color needs to match your exact skin tone.

also, saul loves sephora and would live there if he could.

Marla loves Saul and that's why she feels the need to drag him to places that give him a headache.

Names are difficult and confusing. I'm Asian, but sometimes I'm pink, sometimes yellow, and sometimes neither. For the best foundation, try L'Oreal TrueMatch. It's separated into Warm, Neutral, and Cool tones, and within each group, there's about 10 different shades. It's normally priced at $10, but they often have BOGO Free or BOGO 50% off at CVS.

As for cheapie Shiseido lines, there are tons in Japan. They just never make it out here to the States. Majolica Majorca is a super popular drugstore brand in Japan and it's under the Shiseido umbrella. But even with so-called "Asian" makeup, many times they only make foundation shades geared toward light skinned Asians. What's up with that? It's almost impossible to find a BB Cream or even regular foundation if you are darker than a MAC NC35.
