Well, whaddaya know. He did end up vetoing it.

But you know what, it's not about President Bush. Bush is a relic who will be pushed out of office soon. It's about the new Presidential candidate, John McCain--and the gradual selling-out-ification of John McCain, a man I used to have a great deal of respect for.

In 2005, I was delighted to hear that Senator McCain's efforts pressured the Pentagon to stop the practice of "ghost detainees." After Abu Gharib was outed, McCain introduced a bill to affirm the absolute ban on "cruel, inhumane and degrading" treatment by U.S. agents anywhere in the world--a bill that Bush threatened to veto, too! (deja vu?) Bush eventually accepted McCain's anti-torture bill despite protests from Vice President Cheney.Back then Senator McCain--himself a victim of torture as a Prisoner-of-War at the hands of the VietCong--was one of the few voices of reason in the Republican majority Congress who could actually successfully appeal to Bush.
