It's also wonderful to see the Doctor and Peri getting along so well after a season of off and on squabbling
I read once that Baker and Bryant defied the script direction in order to get that mood. That said, if you want to see the difference between well-scripted squabbling and not, then compare Holmes' script for the previous season (The Two Doctors) with ... well, with anything else from Season 1985. Though Timelash (which comes directly afterwards) offers the greatest contrast. And - on the other side of it - Mark of the Rani (which comes directly before) has that actually friendly bit about meeting a genius.
The scene is well played by both Nicola Bryant and Colin Baker, and I daresay it is a precursor for New Series character moments.
Slightly a tangent: When people start going on about the Doctor's name and/or River Song, I always point out that he was perfectly prepared to come out with his name perfectly casually in front of Peri* in that tube station.
* Master of unintentional alliteration!
