Doctor Who - The Krotons

Feb 24, 2008 22:33

"The Krotons" was a four-part serial, first broadcast on BBC TV between 28 December 1968 - 18 January 1969. It was written by Robert Holmes, and directed by David Maloney. It starred Patrick Troughton as the Doctor, Frazer Hines as Jamie McCrimmon and Wendy Padbury as Zoe Heriot.

Zoe is something of a genius, of course... it can be very irritating at times. )

I always enjoy this story. It may not be a classic, but it's quite enjoyable in its own way. As you say, Zoe and the Doctor get a lot of chance to interact, which makes for fun watching. Gosh, Zoe is just so cute and bouncy in this one! And Jamie proves his strengths when separated from the Doctor - from loyally going after him into the machine to pouring sulfuric acid all over the machine without needing the Doctor's instruction. Clever wee chappie indeed!

Thank you so much for replying! I always enjoy "The Krotons", too. Robert Holmes' dialog sparkles throughout the story, with Troughton getting all the best lines. And I do believe it's the first time his Doctor utters "Oh, my giddy aunt!" which is always attributed to him.

I don't like this serial, I think it's the weakest in the whole season. And when I think about that we could have had "Prison in Space" instead, I dislike it even more...

"The Prison in Space" would have been fun. It's rather amazing it was dropped even after the scripts had been given to the regular cast, the costumes had been designed and one of the guest characters cast. Seeing Jamie in drag, then later taking Zoe over his knee and spanking her to break her conditioning would have been a treat!

Hmm... I really need to dig through my old Doctor Who Magazines and re-read the synopsis.

Yeah. And what did we get? The Krotons, for crying out loud! Bad decision, BBC, bad decision...
