This one is probably my second favourite Barbara story (after "The Aztecs", of course). Of the four main characters, its the Doctor and Barbara who grow and change the most over the first season, with the actors' portrayals very definitely informing the writing. At the beginning, each of the four main characters were pretty much archetypes -- very well drawn ones, of course -- and all grew over the course of the season, but Doc and Barb saw the most dramatic change, and really became the heart and mind of the show. Not enough can ever be said about Barbara as a character nor about Jacqueline Hill's portrayal of her. One of the best companions ever.

What an amazing first season! How many shows start out with a first season this strong? The production crew were fully aware that they could do literally anything, and they ran with it. Can't wait to launch into Season Two!

Thanks for replying! Fantastic insight, Alan! You're 100% spot on: Barbara Wright and Jacqueline Hill quite simply rock.
