coming from the crazy liberal leftist [ ;) ] - don't listen to them - what matters is that you are aware all of the choices out there, and have CHOSEN what YOU WANT to do. THAT is strength. apparently they can't handle it. i'm sorry you had to be subject to their closed-minded remarks. it's hilarious to me that many people who claim to be open minded are actually very judgmental.
I love my crazy Liberal leftist!!! : ) Indeed, it's funny how judgemental "open-minded" people can be. It makes me sad/laugh. lol And they're not mean people. They didn't mean it badly, and I think they believed they were giving me a compliment. They really just didn't realize what they were saying, didn't realize they were talking to someone who, believe me, has thought it all out. Not someone who is just parroting mom and dad...And I know not to listen to them, and it's really not a big deal. Just kinda...threw me for a bit of a loop this evening.
Sorry about the last couple days!! They're been a really emotional couple of days for some reason. Every small thing seems to really effect me. I swear, I post-MS, not normal PMS. lol
ah, i guess we are all guilty of saying careless things like that, but what they said really was quite ignorant. i agree with both you and clara. i think, debb, that people are so used to categorizing people the way they experience them (no matter how limited that is), that they don't even think about other components of your personality. they try & find a "dominant" trait and stereotype according to what they see. even if they do claim to be "open-minded." (i think that's waaay easier said than done.) but we know you, and we know you'll make one hell of a good mother. ;)
Aw, thanks Ni!!! I love you, home-fry! : D And I agree, openmindedness is faaaar easier said than done. I cannot help out agree with Karl Mannheim (a political philosopher) who says that the only kind of objectivity truly attainable is being aware of one's own pre-formed patterns of thought (based on historical and social position) and one's own biases. Not an attempt to eliminate them (that's impossible) but understand and control them and to also use this ability to understand the pre-formed patterns of thought and biases of others. : D I love my political theory classes. :D
hehe, you know, after reading the autobiographies of such people as the dalai lama, nelson mandela, and especially gandhi, i find that to be true as well. :) (all three of them realized that same idea & put it into practice.)
