WAY back in the day, when I lived in Libya (ok, all of 2 years ago, but sometimes it feels like a lifetime) I used to try and collect stamps. In a turn of the utterly ironic, though Libya does not have a functioning postal system (which makes sense as Qaddafi took down all the street signs. Yep. They technically have a postal system, but without any street names it makes it hard to deliver. But they're stamps are awesome!

This makes me laugh. How does anything get done without street names? I can't even imagine that.

There is a lot of navigation by mosque and some of the streets have names, just no signs.

The story is that Qaddafi took down all the street signs (which were in English and Arabic) in 1986 after the US bombing because he was afraid the Marines were going to invade and come after him. Since then...no street signs. They were starting to get street signs and proper addresses (because as I said, I lived in the 5th house on the left on unnamed street #2 right by the Police Station in the neighborhood -- I forget which one) when I left, but it still wasn't all that great.
