holmes and jeeves and who oh my

The good thing that came out of seeing the Sherlock Holmes movie is that it persuaded me to give the books another chance. I'd read Hound of the Baskervilles ages ago while visiting my aunt and uncle, but it didn't impress me much and I never picked up another Sherlock Holmes story after. Now, though, I have zoomed through Barnes and Noble's volume ( Read more... )

I find that Brett isn't entirely the Holmes I picture in my mind when reading the stories, but is still in many ways better. There's so many ticks and things he does in the role that is just so awesome and I find myself loving him more with every episode I watch.

I just watched that one tonight! I loved how they tweaked the story so that Watson could have a part in the proceedings and not just have it be a story of his past that Holmes was telling.

I loved Tennant as an actor (and, actually, still do) before I saw him onscreen as Ten and I think that made how much I came to despise Ten all the more harder to bear.

I think this is exactly it. One of the first things I did after TCI aired was to go find Blackpool and give it a watch. I was enthralled. And Ten was so adorable for most of TCI that I thought nothing of it. And then S2 happened, and I wondered WTF had happened to the character I'd loved for decades and the cute dude who was capable of so much more. I managed (somehow, not sure how, though S4 helped a LOT) never to despise Ten, but I often strongly disliked him and wondered Who He Was And What He Had Done With The Doctor. I really think the reason I cried when he left was because he could have been so much better, so much more, if he'd only been given decent material to work with, and now it'll never happen.

I watched Casanova after it was announced that he would be replacing Eccleston and fell in love from that; I was ridiculously excited after that for his run, since it would be Tennant and RTD again yay! But then no. I've become afraid to rewatch to show for the past couple of years because I don't know if my distaste for Ten will linger in some weird way and affect my love for Casanova and it would make me sad if that happened.

I had issues with Casanova, too--I think that was one of the first places where I noticed that Rusty can't end something to save his life (the last half-hour just left me all "WTF just happened to this show??"), even if it's not DW. I had no issues with DT, though. And really, I don't have any issues with him on DW, because it's clear to me that Ten was just the victim of bad/inconsistent writing, largely thanks to Rusty. Otherwise, why would some of his episodes be so great and others so dreadful?

I think the saddest thing about Ten is that Rusty honestly doesn't get (or refuses to get) that he's turned off everyday, ordinary fans, not just the ones who spend all their time at Outpost Gallifrey (or whatever it's called this week). Kids still watch, for the most part, because they're kids, but there are plenty of adults who have walked away feeling burned, and I think that's sad, especially considering the nostalgia market for a show like this one.

Brett is delectable. I am still bitter that they dubbed his singing in My Fair Lady because his singing voice is FINE, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. One of my favourite scenes is in The Blue Carbuncle when he and Watson are talking to the man who sells geese.
Another fabulous Holmes is Clive Merrison in the Bert Coules radio adaptations. If you get the chance, check them out, because they are brilliant.

Hopefully this new series Tennant's doing in America will give us another character we can love.

Oh man, I just a couple of days ago when checking his wiki page found out that he played Freddie in My Fair Lady! And his not getting to sing made me sadface, because I want to hear his singing voice! I love MFL, it's one of my favorite musicals, but they were kinda fail when it came to the dubbing for singing voices.

I <3 The Blue Carbuncle, both when I read it and when I saw it on screen. I think it was then that I realized how much I adored Brett's Holmes.

I've seen some of those floating around, and will make sure to check them out! Thanks!
