A drabble that doesn't fit any of the prompts in the lifein1973 weekly drabble challenge, posted only becasue it's the first thing I've written this year.
I was blown away by Gene's memories being rekindled by seeing Sam emerging from the tunnel. This was unexpected and surprisingly powerful.
The visions of his team. Ulp.
And the penultimate line? When he opens his eyes, he gasps in pain as he finally sees Sam; waking from his coma only to sleep-walk through life, off of a building and back to his grave.
I think something in my heart broke upon reading that. No wonder Gene was eager to forget.
