I wonder if one can be a mystic without the abstinence piece. I hold to what Robert Heinlein said, "Excess in everything. Moderation is for monks." :)

But I consider myself a monk so....

There are lots of mystics who aren't abstinent but usually the love of the Divine fills you up so much you don't really need or notice those othe rneeds.
