When Ryan first started training, he messed up his ankle pretty bad. (A pothole was the culprit.) Even walking around the house was hard on him. It took about six weeks to completely heal, but after that, he was okay - slow and steady though.

Before then, I taught him lots of stretching exercises I had learned back when I was in basketball camp. I also did a lot of massage work on him I learned from my physical therapist back when I broke my ankle. By the time he felt 100% again, he was totally prepared for running.

His PT requirements for his age and weight is to do two miles in about fifteen minutes, so I just encouraged him to tackle one mile in that amount of time. I went on Google and charted out a path for him, and we walked the two miles together so he could see any potential potholes, broken sidewalks or general unevenness to avoid. He said once he got running, that in itself made a world of difference.

i would reccomend following a program like couch to 5k. it start you out doing jog/walk intervals of 30secs/2mins then works you up every week.

i tried to just run since i thought i was in shape but shin splints stopped me. you need to get your body into shape for running.

also i found out after about 6 weeks into the 9 week program that my shoes were worn out and that's why i had such bad shin splints and knee issues. i would literally sit at home every night icing my legs.

you don't have to spend much money on shoes but get new ones, they are suppossed to last you 400-600miles. the last pair i got lasted about a year since i ran less than 10miles a week. i had shoes that i paid $35 on amazon that worked fine. my shoes now are expenseive buti justify it by knowing they'll last a while and i use them every week.

good luck
