This has really been getting to me recently, and I don't know why it bothers me so much, but it seems as though every fangirl and her dog in the English NEWS fandom thinks that Koyama majored in literature, when he didn't

In my view, you'd need a decent understanding of kanji for studying anything text based in Japanese, but in specialized subjects like history, eventually you'll probably learn common-place kanji that pop up all the time. Names is a different story, but is simple enough to deal with.
But literature, where in every other line people use crazy obscure kanji and bash you with bizarre stuff you'd never imagined existed in your wildest dreams, all in the name of being deep? [/exaggeration] Then it's much, much harder. Koyama is probably a wa-puro baka, I'd bet my front teeth on it.
I agree with you that stuff like this (Wrong facts pervading the fandom)is very irritating. I think I remember Shige making fun of Koyama's geography knowledge even though he was at uni. Koyama probably had to do some basic geography class in that department.
lol, matching icons. Yes, I can take one person having the wrong idea, but when it becomes 'common knowledge' - frequently mentioned 'common knowledge' even - then it just gets on my nerves. Every time I see someone say he majored in lit, I want to correct them, but I can't because then I sound like a bitch and a know-it-all...
XD I honestly don't blame anyone. I mean, the translations aren't wrong, but are extremely misleading. Basically, they're a literal translation, which is a bit of a faux pas in translating. And since we don't really have a 'faculty' of literature in English, it's natural to jump to the conclusion that he was studying literature.
Koyama's my favourite, so it's just a little frustrating for me that most of the English speaking fandom thinks he majored in lit. XD He took a 5th grade kanji test back in 2006, and still managed to get some of it wrong, so I doubt he'd survive majoring in lit. 8D;

Though really, if you're majoring in history, you really ought to have a decent understanding of kanji, in my view. :\

I blame wrong translations for my errors. I really honestly didn't know that but I'm happy I know now.
