When Ray woke up and realized that it was moving day, he wasn't sure if he wanted to stay in bed and ignore it or jump up like it was Christmas morning and he was ten years old again. It was weird to think that in a few hours, he wouldn't live in the house that was left to him

It was just that he was pretty sure Vecchio was going to tense and really touchy, and Ray annoyed him even when Vecchio was relaxed, so. There was really nothing to be done about it.
He walked up to the front porch and rang the doorbell, dressed in old jeans and a faded t-shirt with a sweatshirt. He'd actually not seen Vecchio for a few days--he'd been busy packing, or having the thirty-seventh last meal with your family, as he'd put it, and Ray actually missed him.
Not that he'd say that, of course. But he did, and he would be very glad when Vecchio had his own place and he could go over and they could have loud sex and Ray could spend the night and then make fun of Vecchio's clothes in the morning, like Vecchio did when he stayed at Ray'sBouncing ( ... )

"Oh, hi, Ray. Here to help your bestest friend out? You're so nice." She said it like she was implying something. "Come on in, did you bring coffee for everyone?"

Which meant--fuck, who knew what it meant? Frannie was mysterious in her mood swings, maybe she was just mad at Vecchio for moving out. Despite their constant bickering (or maybe, because of it), they were pretty close.
Which made Ray feel kind of bad, suddenly. "Hey, you can have mine," he offered, though--well, he'd have to stop and get more because it was way too early to deal without caffeine, and this was his favorite.

Ray walked in from the living room, yawning. He glanced between Kowalski and Frannie, saw them both holding coffees.
"Hey," he greeted them, hands in his pockets.

"Seriously, you okay? You got all mad. I was just trying to be nice, by bringing lunch. Figured your family was giving you enough shit, y'know?"

"I don't even know," he said, because it was the truth. He shook his head at his own stupidity.

"You looked at me, a lot. After that night, at the diner? Sometimes you looked at my hands, and I just--dunno. Guess I just got a vibe. Something just made me keep trying."

Luckily, Kowalski's words stopped Ray from going down memory lane and thinking about being stuck in horse-stuffed freezers.
"A vibe, huh? Dunno how I feel about that..." Not that he ended up having a problem with Kowalski's determination to keep trying. Worked out well for them both, after all.

"Yeah, I guess? Dunno, you just seemed...there was something there. At first I thought you just didn't like me, but you know what they say, there's a thin line between--"
Ray realized he was about to say love and amended that quickly to, "--wanting to kick your partner in the head and wanting to blow him at his desk."

Maybe that was why complete strangers seemed to be able to tell that they were together.
"You're hot when you're all poetic like that, Kowalski," he replied, snickering. Guess Kowalski wasn't about to forget what Ray had said about the desk thing.
