Nino was in a bad mood.
And contrary to what people may think, he didn’t like to be in a bad mood.
Jun may say he took advantage of it to get what he wanted, but they both knew this was just teasing.
A car halted abruptly in front of him own and his own vehicle stopped inches from the other. He swore loudly.
Meanwhile, the rain intensified and he looked out onto the passing shoppers hiding underneath their umbrellas.
This was just not a good day.
Why was Nino in a bad mood you may ask?
Well, it all started this morning when his Nintendo decided to crash right at the beginning of his 3-hour break between recordings. Fair enough it was old, but still… Really bad timing…
From then on, it just went from bad to worse.
He received a call from his mother, telling him he had not been visit her enough recently, leading to an argument about his time management skills and the importance of family.
Of course family was still a main part of his life. But lately he’d been working really hard and he was getting parts in dramas which he found really interesting. Surely she should understand that this was important to him too.
After hanging up on his annoyed mum, he’d had to run back to the studio where they were filming a PV. Unfortunately, just has he hurried down a staircase, he’d twisted his ankle.
Feeling embarrassed, he’d hopped the rest of the way until Aiba saw him from afar and sprinted to support him the rest of the way.
Unfortunately, after having his ankle examined, there was no space for doubt. He could not possible perform the dance routine for the PV. He’d tried to argue, but his manager would not hear of it.
He’d had to sit on the side, watching his other bandmates perform their solo choreographies, feeling frustratingly useless for the rest of the day.
Just thinking about it irritated him and he tried to focus back to his present: sitting in his own car. He sighed loudly and Sho chuckled next to him.
“I’m terribly sorry if my company is that boring to you…”
Nino shook his head. “It’s not that… Thanks for driving my car back.”
It had become quickly clear that he would not be able to drive his own car back with his hurt ankle, and Sho had kindly offered to drive him back.
“What is it then?”
“If I’d walked down those stairs normally, I would have been able to dance the part. Now it’s just wasting time for everybody… Postponing the end of filming for the PV…”
“It could have been worse. At least you didn’t break your leg…”
“I suppose…”
There was a moment of silence.
“Sho-chan, did you hear me and Ohno talk before we left?”
The older man smiled slightly.
“I was wondering if you were going to bring that up…”
“Yeah well… How much did you hear?”
“Considering the fact that the door of the changing room was opened and that you weren’t exactly keeping your voices down…” Sho said with a chuckle.
“Okay fine, you heard all of it. But then you agree that Ohno is way out of order, right?”
“I don’t know… How about you tell me your perspective on it?”
Nino smirked. “Do you have to act this neutral? Are you Switzerland?”
The older man chuckled but did not answer the teasing remark.
“Okay, fine. So in my opinion, my family should understand that I am really busy and should be happy for me because I am working on projects that I am truly interested in. But then Ohno took my mum’s side! He’s my boyfriend and he sided with her! Out of all people he should understand, right?! He knows how this job gets and how we can’t lose any opportunity we get!”
Though Sho kept his eyes on the road, Nino could tell he listened carefully.
“I do see your point of view, but try to see it from her angle as well. She is seeing you less and less, and instead of telling her it’ll get better or giving her a date when you’ll spend time with her, you just explain that you are busy. She knows you are busy and I’m sure she’s happy for you, but she must be worried that she’ll just see less and less of you as time goes by.”
Nino thought about this for a moment.
“Well alright, maybe I will try to plan a day at home next time I have a free day, but that doesn’t explain why Ohno reacted like that… He was so insistent that I call her again and ease her worries… People really don’t know how stubborn Riida can be, do they…”
Sho chuckled. “Well, I have my idea on this… On why he took your mum’s side… But I think it’s something you need to figure out for yourself. I’ve already helped you out a lot!”
They had reached Nino’s apartment building. The newscaster parked the car in Nino’s spot and stopped the engine.
“Yeah, alright… Thanks, Sho-chan.”
They both got out and Sho took his phone to call for a taxi.
“See you tomorrow!”
*
Nino fell heavily into his sofa and turned on the TV. He checked his phone for any messages but there weren’t any.
That stubborn man was going to be the death of him, he thought rubbing his eyes wearily.
He didn’t like it when they argued. They usually agreed on most things, or at least agreed to disagree. But this time, Ohno looked like he would not budge. He wanted Nino to call his mother, and was apparently giving him the silent treatment until he did so.
They would just have to work it out tomorrow. For now Nino was just sick of this awful rainy day. He would watch TV, learn some lines for his drama, fill his stomach with instant ramen and fall asleep. At least the next day would be better.
Unfortunately, he could not get Ohno’s annoyed face out of his mind. He was just changing the channel for the 100th time, when he decided to give it up and go prepare his dinner.
However when he opened his cupboard, he discovered that there was not one instant ramen package left. He sighed, feeling suddenly very tired. This day just couldn’t get better…
Now he would have to go to the nearest convenience store to get some more. He considered skipping dinner for a moment, but his stomach grumbled loudly, clearly refusing this idea.
Mumbling miserably, he limped sluggishly out of his flat and to the corner shop. Just as he walked out of his building, he was surprised by the intensity of the rain. It had worsened since Sho had dropped him off and it was now intensified with strong bursts of wind… Looking up to the dark clouds he could see a proper storm building up.
He hurried his steps to the shop, pulling his hood over his head and chuckling slightly to himself as the echo of a very young Aiba came back to him. ‘We’ll create a storm throughout the world!’
He was just walking back to his building, plastic bag in hand, when a strange noise erupted. It seemed to echo from the buildings around him. He climbed up the two steps to his building’s front door and was about to enter the code to open it when he realized something was wrong.
There was no light inside the hall. He frowned and looking to the small electronic pad, realized that it seemed switched off as well.
“No, a power cut? It can’t be…” he muttered.
But sure enough, as he looked around, the usually lit windows of the flats above the street were all dark.
He groaned in exasperation.
This day just couldn’t stop getting worse could it…
At that moment his phone began ringing.
“Yes?”
“Nino! It’s Aiba. Have you also got a power cut?”
“You as well?!” Nino exclaimed.
“Yeah… It’s very strange. I hope it comes back soon.”
“Me too! I’m locked out of my building!”
“Locked out?! How are you locked out? Sho brought you back right? Sho’s asking why you went outside again and how your ankle feels.”
Nino rolled his eyes. “Well I had to get out to get some food. And tell mama Sho that my ankle feels wet.”
“You need to go wait inside somewhere! Hey! Ohno lives not far from you, no?”
“Jun lives closer though…” Nino mumbled. He didn’t really feel like going to his boyfriend’s and asking for a favour when he was still annoyed at him for siding with his mother.
“Oh… right… But. He might not be home either!”
“I’ll take my chances…”
Shivering slightly as the rainwater got through his clothes, he dialled Jun’s phone number.
Strangely enough it rang as busy, but when he tried again, it went straight to voicemail.
He frowned.
“Aiba if you told Jun not to answer his phone... I will hide your stuffed toy…” he muttered darkly to himself.
He had no choice.
Sighing he made his way to Ohno’s building.
He decided not to call him. After all, there was a chance he was out and he had his own key. So maybe he could stay over for as little as possible, dry himself, wait until the power was back and leave without Ohno realizing he had been there.
Luckily Ohno’s building was more old-fashioned than his and the power cut did not prevent Nino from entering and climbing the staircases to Ohno’s floor.
He unlocked the front door and stepped tentatively inside the flat he knew so well. He could not hear any sound but that did not mean anything. Ohno could be so quiet sometimes.
Slowly the pianist took off his shoes and drenched jumper and limped towards the living room.
‘No one here at least’, he thought.
His ankle was painful and he felt exhausted. He let himself fall onto the comfortable sofa and pulled his foot up, wincing slightly.
“Nino?”
Nino jumped in surprise. “You scared me! I’ve told you so many times, you’re too quiet when you walk!”
The older man looked more confused to see him than anything else.
“But… I… Why?”
Nino looked down.
“Believe me, I wish I didn’t have to be here… For the record, I’m still annoyed at you.”
“Well, then why…” Ohno started, coming to sit in the sofa opposite Nino.
“Because I got locked out with the power cut and Jun is not answering his phone.”
“Power cut?”
“Well, yeah…”
Nino observed Ohno for a moment before chuckling. He could not help it, this was too funny.
“You haven’t realized there’s a power cut?!”
Ohno frowned slightly. “No, I was drawing… Didn’t try to turn on a light.”
The younger man laughed. “You’re unbelievable.”
But then he remembered their quarrel and went silent.
“Is your ankle alright?” Ohno asked quietly.
“It’s fine,” Nino answered quickly. He really did not want to give the impression that he had to come to be taken care of.
Unfortunately he was still quite wet from his walk and he gave an involuntary shiver.
“You’re soaking wet, Nino!” The older man exclaimed. “You should have said something!”
“I’m fine, I’ll dry.”
“No, you need to take a warm shower or you’ll be ill!”
Nino sighed but knew there was no point protesting. Once Ohno had decided on something, he was even more obstinate than him.
Reluctantly, he limped to the bathroom carrying a pair of Ohno’s dry trousers and a jumper.
He would not admit it, but the warm water of his boyfriend’s shower felt heavenly. As he enjoyed the warmth, his mind wondered back to their quarrel and how Sho had seemed to understand why Ohno had taken his mother’s defence. He thought about it some more but could not make any sense in it.
He usually understood people well and could read a room very naturally, but here… The only reason he could think of was if Ohno shared his mother’s fear, in that Nino would become too busy and distance himself from both of them. But this was ridiculous! He found it difficult to believe that his boyfriend would have this kind of insecurity when they had been together for so long…
He dried himself and shuffled back to the couch, and as he reached it, a wonderful smell filled the air.
“I saw you bought ramen and figured it would be a good idea to cook it. You need to eat to warm yourself up,” Ohno said as he walked out of the kitchen towards him, carrying tray with a bowl of ramen.
Nino couldn’t stop a grin.
“I am warm now…” he mumbled, but he kept his voice quiet because the smell of the ramen was mouth-watering.
As he began eating, Ohno went to get his own bowl and sat beside him instead of opposite him.
Nino noticed the change and tried to ignore the lift in his chest. He was still partly annoyed at his boyfriend but it was becoming increasingly hard to not just forgive him and go back to their usual playful romantic behaviour.
Once they’d swallowed the last drop of both, they remained silent for a moment, enjoying the cosy atmosphere in the flat.
“Nino… Did you call your mum again?”
The younger man sighed. “No.”
“I see.”
Nino turned to look at the older man. He had a frown but seemed hurt more than angry.
“I don’t understand. Can you tell me why you took her side in this?” he asked trying to keep the tone more gentle rather than accusatory.
“It’s… silly. Forget it,” Ohno replied, looking away.
Could Nino’s hunch be correct?
“Is it because you feel the same as her? Do you think I’m not going to stay close to you because of work?”
There was a long pause where Nino observed Ohno, apparently hesitating.
Finally the older man sighed and nodded.
“I told you, it’s stupid… It’s just… You have been very busy recently, and I started being scared that you would distance yourself from me in the future. And when you had that talk with your mother, well it felt like if I told you about it, you would act like you did with her… That you would just shrug it off… So I though if I could convince you to call her back, somehow I would worry less about it. But then you got all annoyed at me about it, so…”
Nino sighed. “You should have told me how you felt. I had no idea that you worried about things like this.”
He smiled slightly and moved closer to his boyfriend.
“Look, I was annoyed at my mother because I felt like she didn’t understand how much I love my job. If it really makes you feel better, I can call her and try and sort it out with her. We could even go visit her next time we have a free day together.”
Ohno smiled, “yeah, that would be nice.”
Nino laughed, “you only like that idea because my mum is always spoiling you.”
They both chuckled and Nino moved closer to him on the couch, and took his hand gently.
“Listen, I may get busier. But I can tell you without a doubt, I will never let that get between us. You know I can hardly go a day without seeing you,” he murmured.
Ohno squeezed their fingers together and nodded.
“Just, tell me more what’s on your mind, alright?” Nino asked.
“Yes, I will,” the older man replied with a smile.
There was a small pause. “Well, now I’m thinking about how I would like to kiss you.”
Nino laughed. “Oh yeah? You’d like to kiss me?”
“Very much.” Ohno answered, a smile playing on his lips as he leaned closer to the younger man.
“Well then, what are you waiting for?” Nino said, his heart speeding up as he felt Ohno’s breath on his lips.
“I’m not waiting, I’m enjoying the moment,” the young man whispered.
Finally their lips touched.
It was soft and tender and caring, and expressed all that could not be put in words. With each brush of their lips and tongues, it was like a warm current ran through both of them. Whenever they kissed, Nino felt like the world around them disappeared. All he knew was Ohno and him, in that moment, and nothing else. They did not realize that the lights had turned back on in the buildings outside the window, nor that the rain had finally stopped.
Though it had only been a day since they last kissed, this felt somehow new. It was always like this after a quarrel. During the years together, they’d learnt to hold on through the bumps in the road, feeling like they discovered something after each reconciliation.

Nino walked into the green room and sat by Jun leafing through a magazine.
“Hey, how are you? Tough day yesterday from what I heard.”
“Don’t pretend Matsujun, I know you spoke with Aiba.”
Jun smirked. “I don’t know what you are talking about.”
Sho walked in. “’Morning, Nino. Did you get back to your flat alright after the power cut?”
It was Nino’s turn to smirk. “No, didn’t need to go back in the end…”
