“… and the reason you’re not getting promoted is because you’re not … sufficiently tied down.”

Kame blinked.

“What!? I - promo - NOT TIED DOWN!?”

“I’m just telling you what I heard!” Junno said with a laugh. “I was grabbing a coffee and that’s what I overheard the boss saying.”

“But - that - what - it’s me! Damn it, I’m not going to just up and leave! Where the heck would I go!?”

Junno shrugged at the pleading expression Kame had directed his way. “I know that,” he said plainly, “but I’m not the one not giving you the promotion.”

Kame tsked, pulled a face, and took a swig of the beer he’d been nursing. It was a common enough occurrence that the two would go out for a drink at the little bar near Junno’s apartment. Usually though, that happened on a Friday. Today was a Monday.

“Crap,” Kame sighed. “I need a girlfriend.”

He took another mouthful from his beer.

“What the hell, I need a girlfriend. Who needs a girlfriend. The only idiot I knew that needed a girlfriend was that pervy, desperate, weird-ass useless kid I roomed with in college. Damn it. I need a girlfriend.”

Kame passed a hand over his face tiredly. “I should just give up and find somewhere else to work.” He took a swig from his beer. Junno fiddled with his.

“Actually,” Junno said after a long silence, “the boss knows you’re gay.”

“Experimental, with a strong dislike for women,” Kame replied immediately, and then blinked. “How on earth does he know that?!”

“I’m not sure,” Junno replied. “But after that bit about your not getting promoted because you’re not tied down, he said,” here, Junno imitated their boss’s voice, “But if that Kamenashi-kun were hiding from us a steady boyfriend say… that would be a different scenario entirely.’”

Kame groaned. “Is he RETARDED?! He knows I’m gay, realizes I really want this promotion, but thinks I need to be tied down. With a steady boyfriend. Because a steady boyfriend will give me kids and a reason to stay put.”

”Yup,” Junno replied with a grin.

Kame groaned again and polished off his beer.

-

Kame’s eyes cracked open as the sun’s morning light began to filter through the bedroom window. He immediately became aware of the warm body beside him and the horrible ache in his head.

His alarm clock went off, and the noise of it echoed in his skull, driving further the fact that he was hung over. He swore and reached out to smack the clock dead. The figure beside him seemed to think to do the same, reaching out and smacking Kame on the head.

There were more expletives as Kame sat up to glare at the stranger next to him.

Said stranger, now awake, was bed-headed and very confused. His eyes scanned the room before resting blankly on Kame’s face, lost in thought for a moment. “Did we, did uh-”

Kame paled and peeked under the covers. He coughed lightly. “Do the nasty?” he finished. “Yeah, I uh, I think we did.” He blushed and tried to look anywhere but at the handsome face beside him.

“The shower’s out in the hallway first door on your right,” he said finally, eyes fixed on the ceiling. “Go uh, wash up and I’ll get you some clothes.” He blushed again and covered his eyes with a hand. “… I promise my eyes are closed.”

He felt the bed shift after a moment of silence - confusion presumably - as the other man moved off towards the washroom, and slouched involuntarily in relief, a hand still over his eyes. One, one thousand; two, two thousand - he peeked through his fingers and was greeted with the sight of a very fine ass making its way out of his bedroom. He blushed hotly and made a dive for his phone as soon as the other man was out of the room. His fingers punched desperately at the keys.

“Hello?” came Junno’s entirely too chipper voice over the line.

“JUNNO,” Kame exclaimed. “Yesterday, man, bed, home. FUCKED, us -”

Kame broke off as Junno’s loud laugh sent a new wave of pain pulsating in his head.

He swore before muttering quickly, “Sorry, good morning,” eager to launch into a rant. But Junno spoke before he did.

“Yes, I do know you brought home a man last night - we were drinking remember? Well technically it was more you drinking than us.” He laughed again. “Yes, that means you got drunk on a Monday night. No, I’m not judging you. And yes, I agree he’s hot.”

There was a long pause as Kame’s brain struggled to process the information.

“You still there?” Junno’s voice came over the line once again.

Kame swore.

Junno laughed. “I’m not really sure what you should do right now,” he continued, “but I … urge you to remember the promotion we talked about yesterday. And how you need a boyfriend.”

Kame closed his eyes trying to recall the previous night’s conversation. When his brain managed to piece together the gist of it, he swore again.

“Stop swearing so much!” Junno laughed. “Ah, I’ll talk to you later, okay? You figure things out. Don’t come to work, I’ll let the boss know you’re sick today.”

Kame sighed and flipped his phone shut. “Yeah, sick of him,” he muttered.

-

Breakfast an hour later seated at the small dining table in Kame’s kitchen was a decidedly awkward affair. Kame picked at his food and stared resolutely at his plate while the stranger, Akanishi Jin he’d said, spaced out with his eyes fixed resolutely on Kame. Kame fidgeted, trying to find the right way to start the conversation.

“You, uh. So … what do you do for a living?” he attempted finally, looking up.

The other’s gaze took a moment to snap back into focus, and a slow smirk formed on his face. “You know Kamenashi-kun. First you offer me your shower, then you cook me breakfast - complete with coffee, bacon, eggs, hangover tonic, juice, tea, toast - and now you’re asking me what I do for a living?” Kame watched, eyes wide, as the stranger seated across from him passed a sultry glance through his lashes. “If I didn’t know better,” there was that smirk again, “I’d think you were wanting me to be your boyfriend or something.”

Kame jumped and his brain worked quickly through the math - Him, me, boyfriend, promotion! Ka-ching~! “Yes! Exactly so! I’m glad we’re so completely on the same wavelength.” Kame found himself saying, grinned charmingly.

“…Wait what?” The smirk had fallen off of Jin’s face, replaced by a mixture of confusion and curiosity.

Kame blushed, realizing his outburst and decided that explaining the dinner would come eventually. “I … uh, are you free for the rest of the day?”

The confusion cleared up somewhat on Jin’s face, and the self-confident smirk returned. He nodded. “Photographer, self employed. Nothing lined up for shoot today and nothing dead-lined this week.”

“Great!” Kame grinned. “Let’s go have us some fun.”

And so, together they set off on a journey through the crowded city, shoulders bumping and identical grins on their faces. Occasionally Jin would pull at Kame’s arm, drawing his attention to something in a window, eyes sparkling and mouth moving quickly to ramble excitedly about all the things he would buy if he had a million dollars.

Early afternoon found the pair at a small park. Kame, smiling widely at Jin’s antics, paid for two ice creams and made himself comfortable on a bench as Jin waved at a passing bus, seeing how many people he could get on it to wave back.

Kame watched as the bright grin grew wider on Jin’s face, eyes sparkling, turning as he did to report that four people had waved this time! Kame laughed and handed Jin his ice cream, beckoning for him to sit.

“Happy,” he said.

“Blue.”

“Ice cream.”

“White.”

“Park.”

“Green.”

“Fairies.”

“Pretty.”

Kame laughed. “Not a colour also for that? Not pink?”

Jin took a generous lick at his ice cream. “Hey! Just because I’m an artiste. Don’t poke fun!”

They’d been playing word association on and off for the whole day - “Getting to know each other!” Jin had insisted when Kame had initially scoffed at the suggestion.

With a laugh, Kame poked Jin hard in the ribs. Jin squawked in indignation and stuck out his tongue. Kame grinned at this childish display, only to realize a second later that his gaze had flicked down to Jin’s mouth. He pulled his eyes away and blushed lightly.

It took a moment for Jin to realize what had just happened. He laughed then and licked his ice cream once more, deliberately slow this time. Kame growled and blushed a deeper shade of red.

Jin grinned and swiped a thumb across his bottom lip. He leaned over and took a slow, deliberate lick of Kame’s ice cream.

“That’s how you want to play it huh?” Kame glowered, moving to -

Fwap.

Kame cried out as a Frisbee smacked him in the back of the head. Jin’s eyes snapped wide, and he hurriedly looked around to find the culprit responsible. A shuffle brought his attention back before them, where a little boy stood, eyes on the ground, guilt written all over his face and a toe digging into the ground. The boy mumbled an apology and Kame melted at the sight. He grinned at the kid and ruffled the boy’s hair. He assured him that he was fine and shooed at the boy to go play.

As soon as the boy left however, Kame launched into a string of angry expletives.

Panic flashed through Jin and he pushed Kame into a lying position on the bench. He insisted loudly that Kame lay himself flat to manage the flow of blood to the damaged area.

Kame rolled his eyes and let Jin panic. Try as he might though, he was unable to quite keep the small smile off his face.

-

Later at night found the pair in front of Kame’s apartment complex, an awkward silence stiff in the air. Jin watched as Kame, eyes fixed on his shoes, fished keys out of pockets and then jammed them into the keyhole.

Kame turned to meet Jin’s gaze finally and reached out to pull Jin down by the collar. His lips crashed into Jin’s hard and his arms snaked around Jin’s neck. With a moan, Jin pressed Kame into the solid wood of the door, one hand moving to encircle the small waist, the other twisting at the keys and knob. At last they stumbled through the doorway, and Kame grinning, nodded towards the direction of the bedroom.

-

The next morning found Kame distinctly cheerful and bright, going so far as to wave his boss a good morning in the building lobby. He grinned happily at his coworkers on the ride up in the elevator, and even made for some decent small talk.

He stepped out of the elevator, humming happily, moved towards his desk and was promptly assaulted by Junno’s happy laugh. “Figured everything out then?” Junno asked.

Kame grinned back at his friend. “Shut up and get me some coffee.” His grin grew a fraction wider. “But yes.”

-

Rare as it was to see a grinning, happy Kame first thing in the morning, rarer still was a grinning, happy Kame at the end of the day. His finger waved like a baton as he hummed, walking back from the train to his building. He spotted a figure sitting on the steps to the building and tsked good naturedly at the lack of security of the place. He was still humming and tsking and ambling along when he realized with a start that the figure seated on the steps was Jin.

He stopped abruptly and stared at the figure sitting quietly with headphones over his ears and a bundle of flowers in his hand. Kame grinned and made his way towards the seated figure, slapping his hands over Jin’s. Jin shrieked in fright, eyes wide, and pressed a hand, still interlocked with Kame’s, to his chest to quell the violent beating of his heart. Kame blushed at the contact.

“What are you doing here?”

Jin grinned sheepishly and brandished the now crumpled flowers. “I… picked these for you.” He blushed slightly and continued, “I was hoping we could go do something. I know it’s short notice and you probably have other things to do, other places to be, but I was just … by myself. And lonely. And stuff.”

Kame laughed. “Where to?” he asked.

After their visit to the carnival - “It doesn’t matter that it’s a Wednesday! People go to the carnival after work on Wednesdays all the time!” Jin had assured Kame - found the pair at a little noodle shop - “Best in town,” Jin had nodded confidently.

Jin, at present, was busy piling meat from his own bowl into Kame’s. “You need to eat more! So skinny, ah,” he said.

Kame, by now more than a little bit tipsy from the sake Jin had ordered, was busy hiccupping and rambling on about that thing those goddamn awful stupid office ladies at his workplace had done last week.

Jin rolled his eyes and nodded along to the story. He tapped lightly at Kame’s bowl when he’d finished recounting the tale. “Eat.”

Kame looked down and noticed for the first time the new pile of pork in his bowl. He grinned lopsidedly at Jin. “First you give me flowers, then you take me to the carnival - complete with haunted house, cotton candy - and now you fill me up with food from your own bowl?” He tried for a smirk, and continued. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were trying to get into my pants.”

Jin choked on his mouthful of noodles and blushed. He tapped again at Kame’s bowl, still blushing, and told him “Eat!”

-

It was much later that night in Kame’s apartment that Kame heard himself ask “Stay with me a while?” His body was settled tightly against Jin who was already halfway asleep. He felt Jin nod silently, and press a kiss to his hair. Kame closed his eyes, a smile on his face. He knew that it’d been a question popped out from his heart - where ‘a while’ would be regardless of a promotion or not.

-

Kame was thinking about Jin the next day when the director’s secretary suddenly called him to his office. Kame blushed, realizing that he’d been caught daydreaming at work, and ducked his head. He was in for it now.

He made his way sullenly towards his boss’s office, trying to rally his confidence along the way to face the chastising he was in for. He stepped into the office and was greeted by the sight of the director, hands steepled, sitting behind a big mahogany desk. Kame bowed slightly.

“Kamenashi-kun,” the director stated. “You’ve been hiding something from us haven’t you?” Slowly, a grin split across his face.

“I- I have?” Kame asked, mind racing to find plausible excuses for anything his boss might accuse him.

The unnerving grin grew wider as the director nodded. “Like the fact that you now need two seats at the company dinner event on Friday.”

Kame blinked. “Yeah,” he said with a nervous laugh. “I guess I should have told someone about that.”

The director nodded again, sagely. “Now,” he continued, “I have something to ask of you.”

Kame tensed.

“Could you please tell Taguchi-kun that eavesdropping by the coffee machine is not discreet in the least?”

A bark of laughter burst forth from Kame’s lips. He was still chuckling when the director said, “By the way, what colour walls would you like for your new office?”

Kame’s laughter broke off, and he gaped in shock. He bowed eventually and said “Thank you,” before bursting into chuckles again. “Pink,” he told the director. “Pink, like his fairies.”
