From the articles I've been reading, African journalists are way more eloquent than US journalists.

I haven't read a lot of british news, but the little I've read usually isn't so eloquent either. So, I think it isn't just the language difference, though that may be a factor in it.

African journalists also use a number of colorful phrases, and it's just interesting. I figure that's more a cultural thing, and they're just directly translating. They also seem unafraid to take a position in an issue, which has its pros and cons.
