[A friend asked in their own LJ how everybody was doing. I responded with the following, more or less, and it occurs to me that I should post it as a diary entry here

An option, other than having actual cow-orkers, is to do some co-working; using (and possibly acquiring) a portable development platform and either renting a desk at a coworking center (e.g. http://www.cambridgecoworking.com/ ) or, less formally, meeting friends at a coffee house/similar and claiming a table.
It gets you out of the same workspace, and means you will get some of the things you may find missing working on your own.
(as for a portable work environment, I've found adding 2 USB-powered monitors, an external keyboard, a powered USB hub, and a mouse to my netbook turns it from an ultra-portable into a viable work environment. Admittedly, in terms of real estate, 2 11-inch and 1 16-inch monitor pale in comparison to my dual 23-inch monitors at home. also, depending on what I'm doing, I might have to do builds on my home server rather than locally to the netbook, but that's not a huge deal for me.)

I've been considering that idea on and off since December -- I got together with my colleague Chris Herot, which is bootstrapping his own company, and he recommended the same idea. (Indeed, he's working in the building you link to.)
In principle, I suspect it's a good idea for the reasons you cite. I worry a bit about the fact that I am, when you get right down to it, annoyingly shy, and I suspect that I will find it difficult to socialize in that environment. I may have to force myself to just deal, though. Thanks for the reminder...
