So for any friends in Durham, I shall express a personal political view: the Durham Food Tax is a very bad idea and should be voted against. Food taxes are a horribly regressive way to raise revenue! More info here.

Aaack. Food tax is just mean. It's the one thing on the planet that you truly must have. That and water. And, really, who's pocket book will you hurt? The people who have the least.

You guys reflect two problems with this campaign. First, if your are not from Durham you may not have taken time to understand what this is really about. Maybe that's why the Durham Committee has joined up with two groups that are not from Durham. Second, it is not a food tax. All these "NO FOOD TAX" signs really ought to be "NO FOOD FACTS" signs because their very objective is to confuse the public. This is a tax on meals eaten away from home at resturants and the like. Buy your food, take it home and cook it. Otherwise pay the minimal $.01 tax to help improve Durham and make it a more attractive place.

Hello courageous anonymous poster !

People of all incomes eat "prepared" food. Food is still food and taxing it is still regressive!!

Please find a single parent with two children and two jobs and give them a lecture on how much time they have to prepare everything from scratch. Even AT the grocery store if you buy a rotisserie chicken because you have a JOB.. guess what,, you get hit with the Durham FOOD TAX. No matter how you spin it, this is taxing FOOD.

Now if you want a luxury tax on restaurant meals over $50 or something.. then I might feel differently. This tax is not a luxury tax.. it is a massively regressive tax on FOOD to build "recreational and cultural attractions".
