If I had to make a school for the deaf, I would have it be an oral school for the deaf but with signs. Teachers would talk and sign at the same time or just talk. For myself, I went to mainstream schools all my life and I have learned both sign language and some oralism, but I feel most comfortable with using sign language and rarely use my oral skills. In my opinion, oral skills are only useful for deaf people to understand what other hearing people are saying and to improve one's English skills but doesn't help them much to communicate with hearing people totally. That's one big positive in having both sign language and oral skills.
I agree with you that we need to shorten summer vacations so the students can spend more time learning skills for the future.
