I Clearly Don't Understand The HST

Went to Tim Horton's today. Based on regular experience, I can tell you that two extra large coffee's comes to 3.44. So, when I looked at my Tim card that had 4.40 on it, I thought rather than having a card with less than a dollar on it I would simply get a donut. After tax, a donut is 95 cents ( Read more... )

Here's how it works. Under the new HST rules in Ontario any food order at a quick serve that subtotals $4 or less is only subject to 5% PST. Over $4 you pay 13% HST. So Tim did charge you correctly for HST. Basically on your receipt HST is PST, HST1 is GST.

...and had I bought the donut separate it would have come out accurate?

Am I the only one who sees the absolute absurdity in that?

Yep...buying them separate you would only paid PST.

No...you're not the only one who thinks it absurd. What I don't understand is that $4 is such an arbitrary figure. Why not $5?
