the new old skool

gwen stefani's new album 'the sweet escape' is a complete mixed bag.. there's three or four tracks, however, that credit a mention.. we're talking 5 star people. after madge's 'confessions on a dancefloor', robbie's 'rudebox' and p!nk's 'i'm not dead', it's hard to award a 5 to any music..

I can't take an artist seriously if they sing some sort of song, and then break out into "This shit is bananas, B.A.N.A.N.A.S." for the hell of it. She's dead in my books. Her old stuff was fine, but she's gone downhill with every song I've heard from her.

No Doubt rocked the casbah, but she's just turned into teeny-bopper bullshit hype now.

There is okay teeny-bopper stuff though, like Christina Aguilera for example, so don't think I hate all that sort of crap. She has a decent voice (or at least uses it to its full potential, and her lyrics aren't a sack full of ghetto vocabulary that's been smashed constantly against brick walls.

Damn her, fix her fucking music, I'm sick of her voice.

End rant! :P

ok i wasn't talking about the track 'hollaback girl'... i mentioned three specific tracks from her new album, not the first one (which that song was on), and i can assure you i think most of the rest of her solo work, including the unfortunate 'hollaback girl' is pretty damn poor.. that film clip made me retch.. it was so different from no doubt and the gwen stefani i grew up with and love, the one billie talks about below..

i don't think 'this shit is bananas' is any kind of genius :p i'm kind of upset you'd think so little of me haha

im still a big fan for gwen, i'll never forget buying the first no doubt album then desperatly trying to find everything out about her, buying the TVhits poster book because she was so damn cool. i remember thinking wow! a REAL rock chick. we demanded our music teacher, teah us the chords to 'dont speak' and we played it more than that leonardo's bride song ...

she's not the same woman she was back then but i still love her, shes so much fun to watch, her energy is just the same as it was when she was jumping around on the clip for 'im just a girl'. i dont 100% love all of this album like i hoped i would, but i think you picked the few tracks that actually made me smile and say, 'ah ... there she is ... thats gwen'

for me, gwen was no doubt.. the other band members, while talented, were incidental.. when i listen to their stuff it's just like hearing a gwen song from an early album.. of course, i like synth and electro music, so when she made the switch to pop i was very excited.. the problem is she's gotten in with the r&b crowd, which heavily caters for the american market and just doesn't resonate here. some of the songs on the album were truly le suck.

but those were the three tracks i thought were amazing.. they seemed like the next step in her natural evolution. hopefully they'll be released as singles somewhere down the line. probably not though.. record companies make stupid decisions when it comes to things like that :(
