Love and grateful for this story!mikasamuDecember 7 2008, 01:32:15 UTC
I'm always happy when you post a story, and I adore this one. I can't help but feel that "Hatake" is the clone; "Kakashi" seems to have more depth, emotional maturity, and overall, to be more human. This chapter just adds to that impression. It would make sense for Hatake to be a bit quicker but less compassionate if he were the clone and fashioned for accomplishing a mission. That said, the story is written so well that it's impossible to tell which is the clone (particularly as we don't see Hatake's interactions with Anko, and can only infer from his morning with Iruka and comments from Anko). The implications of what it means to be human, and for clones merging with their creator, are fascinating. It is the insight into Kakashi (I love the way you show his commitment to his village), and Iruka's growing affection for him even knowing the risk, that I especially love.
What's interesting is that we're all in love with Kakashi, because we're supposed to be- he's a sympathetic character and you're an excellent writer (to say nothing of the Pavlovian conditioning of fangirls through massive amounts of reading). The emotions are there, subtle and deep. I, for one, really like the relationship with Iruka, distant and without too much sharing, but nonetheless supportive. And filled with snark. Must love the snark!
But what's interesting is the assumptions we automatically make about Hatake. Yeah, he's an asshole, but that's just because Hatake Kakashi is our favorite asshole. Kakashi, seen from the outside, is putting up just as much of a front, simply of a slightly different sort. We don't know if Hatake is so incredibly confident and simple and direct, without any doubt- we just assume he is, because we see his public face. Y'know, the one of the confident smug asshole. We see nothing of his introspection, don't know if he has any or not. One would assume he does, being driving to continue to

wow... this is so sad... 'kashi's POV is just...so fatalistic. in his estimation, he's the clone... he wants to live so badly... but because he's the shinobi he is, he'll do the honorable thing...
for the record, my money's on Kashi being the real deal... but the trekker in me keeps screaming~ "He's bisected! split in half!"
