new tori - song by song breakdown

Give - what is that at the beginning? a keyboard or a guitar? very atmospheric and moody. Tori discovers more patches on her keyboard. Probably the best opening track in a decade and also the best vocal performance i've heard in quite a while.

Welcome to England - okay, nice weaving of the bass, piano and keys at the start. a by-the-numbers Tori single, but nicely done. there's a slight lyric callback to "Caught a Lite Sneeze". nice breakdown on the second verse.

Strong Black Vine - it's "Kashmir"! Tori rocks out with the hammond. nice time changes. almost proggy.

Flavor - nice. sounds like it can be from the "Venus" disc only more organinc - less electroinc

Not Dying Today - sounds like 70's game show music.

Maybe California - obligatory ballad, but one of her better ones

Curtain Call - could be a lil more driving and a lil less homogenized in the production. why all the guitars?

Fire to Your Pain - catchy. they'll try to make this the next single.

Police Me - sounds like a Y Kant Tori Read track. nice use of the melotron. my new misheard lyric (police = please) - try it. it's fun.

That Guy - weird but not too offensive. gets better as it builds up. yeah, this sounds very broadway musical. b-side material

the title track - pass that joint, dude

500 miles - shit. i prefer the other song about walking 500 miles (especially if it's sung by Patrick Stewart as the Scottish Therapist). the worst track on the album. would fit right in Beekeeper.

Mary Jane - a/k/a Velvet Revolution Part 2

Starling - starting to lose me here....

Fast Horse - ZZZZZZZZZ

Ophelia - obligatory ballad II

Lady in Blue - um...almost, but not quite. could have potential, but it really drags at 7+ minutes. couldn't you have someone soloing at the end of this? maybe i'd like it better if I didn't fall asleep three tracks ago.

to summarize: some nice production and some nice moments, but in desperate need of trimming just like the last three albums. inoffensive, but not vital.
