Raven gets a lot of stick, poor geljazzypomAugust 29 2011, 18:59:31 UTC
I think she did the best she could by her, and she had her own agency when it came to making her choice. Can't ask for more than that, I say.
Re. the religion thing: I wouldn't go near any religious themes because I don't know anything, anything at all about Judaism...it'd make me very uncomfortable. Having said that, I thought, possibly because it just doesn't come into any other fandom that I've been in, that the amount of mentions of/fics about Erik's religious background has been considerable! Interesting XD
Hmmm, the thing that makes Magneto well... Magneto is his whole experience of the Holocaust, and the fact that he's the embodiment of 'never again'. But a lot of the fics that do reference his religion, they make it more THE issue than say... something natural and woven into his being, if that makes sense? Or probably, if he just turned away from it, that would be okay, too. But Magneto seems to be a man who doesn't forget - good or bad

On the subject of Erik and Erik's faith, or not: yeah, that is one of the things that I want from fic that I am not getting. Or giving. Sigh. (It's interesting to me that the movie went there: having Erik's moment before he moves the satellite be not just him whole and young and with the mother he adored, but a moment of Jewish faith and tradition. They could have omitted it- Erik and his mother holding a kitten, Erik and his mother picking daisies- but they wisely didn't.)
I haven't explored it in fic, mostly because I haven't found an opportunity to do it that feels natural enough. I don't tend to write with a central theme in mind, or any particular agenda. But I feel like you do: I sometimes read a story and feel like story-Erik is missing an indefinable piece.
On the other hand, I do remember hastily backing out of a mediocre fic that had Erik talking about "the saints," and since it wasn't a football team, I closed the browser.

Quite. I thought that memory was lovely. I'm nowhere near religious, but Ave Maria sung at mass at certain times of year will move me to tears. I still remember the hymn to the blessed sacrament when you wait for the confirmed Catholics to go to the priest and have a bit of wafter and wine, and how the rest of us unconfirmed heathens would sing, eat the bread and drink the wine/ cause we are one in his divine - and I stopped going to school sanctioned mass years ago.

I agree very much that Raven's character arc was so much more than 'going with the man who told her she looked pretty', as I've seen it described elsewhere. Unfortunately, I often see that assessment coupled with critiques of how all the women appear in underwear or nude in the movie, while all the men are fully clothed, which is something I agree is bad storytelling and filmmaking. But Raven's character arc? I really, really liked it. Out of all the women in superhero movies this summer (or at least the ones I've seen: Thor, Green Lantern, XM:FC, and Cap), she was by far the most compelling and humanized.
As for my irritation at the nudity thing, well... I channel that into cracky kinkmeme prompts.
I mean, with Emma Frost, her desire to stroll around half nude is canon; because she uses it to disarm, and distract. Her sexuality is her armour, and doesn't detract from her mind being like a steel trap, and being rather bloodyminded. She's also a bit of an elegant troll in the earlier canon of comics, because she does stuff for the lulz. If Emma Frost had been played by an actress who understood the character, she'd have been stronger.

Hmm, this. Although I did like how Jane Foster was presented in Thor. She wasn't in love with him, not really, but willing to use him as a jump off. It seemed like a brief, intense flirtation, and you got the feeling that at the end of it, when Thor gets back to Asgard, Jane'd be fine. She wouldn't mope, because she had her work and her family structure. It was a fling, and she'd move on from that.

Was The Hulk good? I can't remember why I didn't go and watch Hulk, but I shall remedy that.
Man, I'm good with not getting reviews, but its just that... if I'm answering about six of your prompts, just say, "Hey!" LOL
I've been around, and trying to get back into long, plotty fic - after spending all that time doing short stories, it's going to be hell getting back into the swing of things
