Argh, LJ ate my comment, but basically: I love this review. I love what you place an emphasis on, and how clearly your love for the album shows through. I don't usually listen to rap, but I'm going to give this album a try (I am always up for branching out my music tastes, and baroque fantasy rap + Bon Iver sounds AWESOME). I'll let you know how it goes. :) Even if it's not my style, thank you for sharing your love for some art. :D :D :D
Yeah, I haven't had touch with rap for a whilejazzypomDecember 2 2010, 19:41:56 UTC
(Grew up on De la Soul, Slick Rick, Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff, Wu Tang Clan etc) but fell out of rap when it got overrun by the whole thug mentality (no, I don't need to suck anyone's d*ck, thanks), and it was Kanye West who got me back into the fold, so to speak. I like the fact that yes, he got into rap, but he listens to other music (Portishead, classic, etc) . It makes him experimental and tough, I think. Because of his outlook, he's also able to tap other artists who might not necessarily fall into 'rap' like Kid Cudi, and I'm grateful to West, really.
West is someone who's ambitious music wise, and this album shows it in spades. He's moving away from rap and into only he knows, but I'm enjoying the ride.
