Oh! Fabulous! All resigned and tired and matter-of-fact, and then Mal turns up, which throws a whole other light on hoping she'd forgiven him his exuberance and foolish choices, since he's still all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed himself.
I really like the idea that she doesn't spend any time at all worrying about the truth of what she says, only the comfort of it, and that she allows herself only a flash of feeling (but that she does allow it).
Oh, I'm so glad it worked for you. It was hard to get a character across in a small piece like this, especially when it's not all fun and games (death and isolation being as far from that as you can get, I suppose). But Zoe's strength is a very natural thing to portray.
