It's a little from column A, and a little from column B in terms of who's controlling the fabric. I think you're supposed to be the guide, and it's supposed to run with it.
Oddly enough, for how paranoid I am about not getting my fingers caught in the zooming needle, I think I've sewed tiny layers of my skin far more time while sewing by hand, and never on a machine. ^_^
How hard you press the foot pedal controls how fast the machine goes ... like an accelerator pedal on your car. Takes practice, but straight lines are good practice.

You should be able to adjust the speed on the machine.
The machine moves the fabric. Don't attempt to push/pull the fabric though - you'll end up stretching it and making it wonky.
