I think you should make notes in the actual cookbook. You know, for your kids for later. Or make a copy of the recipe and put it in a binder and make the notes there - whomwas there, changes you made, noteworthy events that day, like a journal of sorts.
They might not, but thrie children certainly will. Some of my most treasured things are slips of paper with my grandmother's recipe notes. I don't even know what some of them mean, but they still smell like her kitchen.
For the recipes - it seems to me that the point of a life list is to enjoy doing the things on it, so it would be best just to document whatever you enjoy documenting about each. Might be different for each. Some recipes will likely be gems, and for some, I imagine, the result of preparation will merely be grim satisfaction and a checkmark.
For the herb garden - do it again, but plant more basil next time.
