This is really interesting. I also think of those quotations from Psalms as being about how we can fake ourselves out, lie to ourselves - but that we cannot fake out God. God knows our true motivations and beliefs. If we are to sincerely draw closer to God we have to be truthful to ourselves about what God sees in us. In the Yom Kippur liturgy there's a piece in the confessional section "Ein Nistar" - nothing is hidden.

Also - I don't remember which insurance company that is either but they use one of my favorite songs ever, "Half Acre" by Hem.

It's true, I've lived through many a Yom Kippur service and enjoyed the lessons learned. I know it's deepened my appreciation for all religious views of the divine.

a belated L'Shana Tova to you!

Thanks - and I think you aren't late on L'shana tova until You Kippur!

I know this was in your words, but Jesus not only taught us how to act, but how to be, which encompasses our actions, our thoughts, and our feelings. But I think it goes even further than that.

One of the things that I try to keep in the front of my mind is that charity is not just an action - it is a literal change in heart. Emulating Jesus isnt just acting like him, or thinking or loving like He did. It is truly having that change of heart, and losing the desire to be anything other than your potential.

You're right, poor word choice. I think "what to be" might fill that in.
