Finding Balance

Today, Stephie and I played a mean practical joke on somebody, and it was really funny. We're both people who have been called angels by other people, so it's pretty unusual for us to let out our cruel sides. But sometimes, enough is just enough. I guess you can consider this a sort of confession ( Read more... )

I always forget how much of my political/philosophical personality comes from you. ^_^

Oh, and by the way, I really doubt if the brimstone preachers on the quad have the authority to condemn anyone to Hell.I don't think anyone on Earth has that authority, but that's sort of a given. I'm just reminded of a story where my brother was walking through his own quad where a radical was claiming that God would grab homosexuals by the genitalia and cast them into the fires of Hell. My brother publicly discredited him, but it'll still create a bad image on the religion, not simply the person ( ... )

This whole topic feels like a dangerous one to me (dangerous for me because I am so undecided, but interesting non-the-less).

Still I agree with you a lot. I think morality IS a personal thing on many levels. And I think your view is actually quite Biblically supported.

And in general I think some people just feel more secure assuming they're right and that thus they are obligated to share. I can't blame anyone for that. If you really felt that you knew the absolute truth and it would help others, I bet you'd do the same, but probably in a less hurtful way, ne?

And your dad is a smart man.

So what was the practical joke? You mentioned it and I was all like, "Oh, this is goin' be good," and then nothing. Nice bit of philosophy and such, but I wanted to know what it was that you did. Having an interesting intro on your LJ like that, in then not delivering, is just evil and immoral...and I'm a sarcastic bastard. I forget where I read this/hear this/thought this on my own by chance, but I'm not too sure if god has the same definitions of right and wrong as we do, if at all, just because his perspective is soo different from anyone else's. Time has no bounds for him, and he knows everything, and everyone...okay, I'm not sure about that, I just want to know what you did.

Josh,

Oh, yeah -- that, too! After all, half the fun of pulling a practical joke is telling about it. Besides, like Brighman42 said, if you don't tell, the man with the horns and the big spoon will darn you to heck for all eternity. Either that, or you'll end up with a job in accounting or computer programming in a giant corporation, which is about the same thing. :-)

My guess is the 'victim' was a nosey neighbor.

Love,
Dad

Perhaps part of the practical joke is not saying what the practical joke is. Sometimes wondering is half the prank. ;) That said, I might make the extent of the joke known in a more private venue.

I think our philosophies are pretty similar.
