Mal watched the small cat run into his ship with a weary shake of his head, wondering for the briefest moment if he could shoot it and blame it on the intruders. Then his guilt smacked him upside the head in the form of a sidelong glare from Zoe. Of course she’d know what he was thinking.
“We get Kaylee back, Sir, she’s going to want to see her cat.”
Mal groaned; he feared he’d never get that thing off his ship. He focused his gaze back on Serenity taking aim at the dark cavernous hole into her cargo bay. He’d seen movement in there among the shadows. Finally, Wash’s head appeared around the edge of the bay doors. He grinned lopsidedly and waved upon spotting his wife.
“Everything alright in there, Wash?” Mal said as they approached the ship.
Inara and Simon appeared in the doorway behind him and Mal took in the way they were all armed. Inara spoke first.
“The ship is fine, Mal.” Her look told Mal that other things might not be-like the four of them. He hated to think of these four having to kill when he should have been there. Or at least his hired gun should have been.
“I led the charge, Mal, everything’s right as rain,” Wash said a little loudly, brandishing Vera in one arm.
River came out to stand by her brother, a look of sadness on her face. “They were bad men. Greedy mercenaries in search of their prize.” River was trying to tell him something more than the words meant, that Mal knew, but it was beyond his reach for now.
“Well, we got our own mercenary to go in search of now,” Mal growled, stalking into his ship to see what damage had been done.
Given the perplexed looks on the others’ faces, Book began to explain. “It seems someone is after Jayne…and Kaylee is with him.” Inara gasped and he gave her and Simon the details, introducing Mr. Bevis, as they followed the captain inside.
“Honey, did you really fire Vera?” Zoe asked her husband amusedly.
Wash looked slightly perplexed as he ran a hand through his hair. “I need to look in a mirror?”
Simon caught her attention from ahead and pointed to his ear while shaking his head. She nodded in understanding.
“Wash, baby, Jayne wears earplugs when he shoots that gun,” she spoke a little more loudly for his benefit.
“Jayne wears hairplugs?” If possible, Wash looked even more confused. Zoe sighed and shook her head, finally understanding how the captain felt.

Rich Hessian was standing outside in the cold and he wasn’t a happy man. His hired guns had lost Cobb early on and he’d had to bring his own men out to track the man. The problem was that two of those hired guns were along with them. He knew he might need them, but he wasn’t entirely sure they’d follow his orders. That was the problem when the only thing between you and the people around you was money. That was why Stitch had been betrayed; he’d trusted a man who only cared about the money.
He cocked his gun at the sound of feet approaching on the crisp snow, but relaxed when he saw it was Bob. A smile almost crossed his face when he remembered that it had taken him nearly two years to quit calling the man Little Bobby. He was young still, but he’d grown considerably since he’d hired him.
“You find somethin’, Bob?”
“Yessir, I think I picked up some faint tracks ‘bout a quarter mile from here. Don’t know who this guy is, but he’s good at hidin’.”
Rich just nodded. He was beginning to think that his task was going to be a little harder than he’d thought. At this point, he just wanted it over with.
“Let’s move out, see if we can’t catch ‘em before sun-up.” They moved off silently in the falling snow.

Kaylee lay next to Jayne, wide awake and listening to his heart beat. The blanket was wrapped around the both of them and Jayne held her close as he slept. She was right next to him and yet she felt a million miles away. How could I go from feelin’ so good, to feelin’ so bad, she thought. She’d wanted Jayne, no two ways about it; had been thinking about him since she’d talked with Inara or maybe even before that. And she’d found out real quick that he’d wanted her, or at least she thought he did.
She blushed as she remembered strong hands carressing her body, gentle and rough all at the same time, his needy moans and growls matching her own. But then those thoughts were disturbed with others; what if she’d just pushed him into it? Weren’t many men who’d hesitate to be with a willing woman, let alone a man like Jayne Cobb. Maybe he hadn’t really wanted her at all and now she’d ruined it. She’d ruined their friendship and nothing would be the same again. She pulled away from him and turned over, hoping he’d think she was just turning in her sleep.

Jayne lay on his back in the hayloft, wide awake and listening to Kaylee breathe. Girl is snugged right up against me an’ I don’t know what the hell it means. He’d tried to resist her, but who in the name a’ Buddha could do that when she was sayin’ those things? And he’d kissed her, not somethin’ he normally does…well not with whores and Kaylee weren’t no whore, so that was why he’d done it. Not no other reason…
It hit him then that she’d probably just been scared and cold. Girl like her wasn’t cut out for runnin’ from killers; she’d just needed someone to make her feel better. And she was a bit like him in that way, need came out in the physical form. It was why she got so frustrated with the doc, Jayne knew, ‘cause that pansy-ass wouldn’t come near her even when she was givin’ him all the signals for it. The doc…gorram it, but he was the one Kaylee wanted, not some old hired gun who had a price on his head on more than one planet. And he’d gone and messed up everything. She was the only one on the boat that didn’t treat him like fei hua, but now she would-now that he’d done taken advantage of her.
Jayne felt her pull away from him and roll over on her side. He let his hand trail across her hip as she moved, completely certain he’d never get to touch her again.
