My position, for what it's worth, is that a story is a collaboration between writer and reader. The reader brings his/her perceptions to the text, but the text still exists without the reader, and the text is different for each reader.

I, for one, was deeply offended by the reviewer dismissing Mainspring as "just another boys' adventure", as if boys' adventure stories were, somehow, unworthy things in themselves. I don't think I could have got through some of the rockier parts of early puberty had it not been for Kim. Perhaps that reviewer would have denied me that pleasure, on the grounds that it would lead me to become a supporter of British imperialism or some such nonsense.

The irony, such as it is, is that Mainspring *is* a boy's adventure. The sequels definitely are not, but that is where I started. With a boy on an adventure.
