[lj] A sort of LJ game

I'm curious about something. What does your LJ handle mean, both to you and the world?

Mine is obvious. jaylake is my name, my auctorial brand. I originally looked at jlake, but it's a long-dead Justin Timberlake fan journal that's never been deleted, so the name wasn't available. That's for the best, as jaylake works better ( Read more... )

Personally I chose something completely random which could never show up in a Google search...

renegade is a nickname I acquired about 10 or 12 years ago (mostly as a play on Renee, but in part because I'm sometimes known to like to well, stir things up and do things my own way).

A lot of times, renegade isn't available as a nickname, so I started using renegade500 as an online presence because it was random enough that I'd probably always be able to have it as a handle, and that has proven to be the case pretty much everywhere, so far.

I used to use something else, but it was taken when I started my LJ. Then I saw this bumper sticker, and I thought, What the heck is that? "Subduction leads to orogeny." I looked it up, and I laughed, and I thought, Here I am, making mountains, climbing mountains, trudging uphill, so I kept it. So basically, it's geeky-amusing.

I haven't made a sale, so it's not like I'm not marketing anything. And much of the stuff on the LJ is personal, to keep touch with friends, etc. Plus, my real name is so common that googling yields dozens of us anyway.

I use the handle darrkespur for a lot of things. I've been using it for a long time, since I first started writing/using the internets. The first part is the surname of the lead character (Jax Darrke) in the first novel I attempted, back 8 years at the age of 15. The second half is a reference to my football team Tottenham Hotspur or Spurs, because I had to squeeze some sports fan reference in there. It's been the same ever since, although my publications start increasing in number/repute I'd be temped to make a tomaslmartin one...

I started my account years ago as a way to read other peoples' f-locked posts (that's how they sucked you in, in the Old Days) and tried to use "meerkat" (my nickname) but both that and suricata were taken, so I adapted.

If I were starting out today, intending to use my LJ as a career marketing tool, I'd use a variant of my name, but a name-change at this point seemed sort of silly -- half the online world knows me as "suri" now anyway (and my name and bio and whatnot are clearly listed in my User Info).
