My only thing against Scripps is that all-anything schools scare me. I imagine all girls is more tolerable than a religious school, but still seems like an overly limiting factor to me. Society isn't all female; it would seem wierd to me to go to an all male or all female world for four years. I also imagine UCLA is a tad cheaper.
I wouldn't want to have to walk across the street for a male/female perspective. But that's just me. It sounds like a really good school, still, just, if it were me, I'd go to UCLA.
Yeah, Christine is right. The Claremont system makes the "all women's school" thing not an issue for me. Though, Richard, I understand what you're saying about the inflexibility (and sometimes close-mindedness?) of homogeneous environments.
Of course, another nice thing about Scripps is that the classes are not even all women (really, the only time Scripps's campus is officially "all women" is in the dorms at night), which helps as far as diversity of thought is concerned. Because of the cross-registering system in the Claremonts, students from the other Claremonts (i.e. Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, Pomona, and Claremont McKenna) can take classes on Scripps's campus because all of the Claremonts are literally right across the street from the other. It's insanely nice. I love the 5-C system. :)
So, that's a very long way of saying that Scripps would certainly not be an ethnically diverse place and (at least in the dorms) it would not be a... gender-ly diverse place (heh... making up words left and right!), but the classes would be

Sorry to stalk your journal, but I'm in the UCLA community and saw your post there. I couldn't help but notice you were making a similar decision to me in terms of where you are choosing to go to college. I also was tremendously interested in the Claremont Colleges (Claremont McKenna in particular - and I didn't get into Pomona either, wah, first choice), but price became a huge factor for me when I made my final decision.
I have a friend at Pitzer who is really happy there; she loves the small atmosphere where she feels like people know her and she knows who she sees on campus. She has a core group of very close friends that she does everything with, and she says there is a lot of interraction between the campuses so it can make a very small environment a little bit bigger if she wants that. She said she does kind of feel sometimes like Claremont the town is a little stifling sometimes, but generally she is very happy

Try cutting Scripps's tuition in half. Try cutting Scripps's tuition by... I think 3/4.
