The Big Wet: Day 3

Jan 13, 2011 19:02

It's days like these that make me resent being disabled. WTF, body? I just want to pick up a shovel and bucket, you know? *frustration*

The pictures on the television and online are all just heart-breaking. The clean up is going to go on and on. I thought it was interesting how one commentator (they're all starting to run together a bit) mentioned ( Read more... )

queensland, brisvegas, the big wet, weather, politics

*hugs*

I'm feeling the helplessness here too, a state away, so I'm making tiny teddies to auction for QLD RSPCA.

Anna Bligh has been really impressive under pressure. I've also been really impressed by the rational, transparent information regularly coming out from official sources.

The RSPCA will be very happy with that! They have a hell of task in front of them.

Stay safe where you are too. It's a bit scary just how much water and flooding is hitting the east coast. :(

We are in the Central West, and on decently high ground. Though there is a creek downhill, our house is 150 years old, so I think if it were going to flood that high, it would have already this year. There has been a lot of rain.

It's been a bit weird trying to track this from here (and with spotty internet at the moment). There's a definite sense of disconect. Of course, the news that Tony Abbott is being a dick brought it back into the realm of the normal and familiar!

One guy asked me about the floods - apparently, American news coverage of it has explained that the area affected is "the size of Texas". When asked to confirm this, I had a moment of total blankness, before trying to explain that Australians don't think of things in terms of the size of American states. I mean, it wasn't an unreasonable comparison for Americans (and at least this guy knew what was going on, which is more than can be said for most), but ... well, anyway.

Thanks for your posts. They really help to get the feel from way over here. Here's hoping they do redesign while they have the opportunity - and not assume that floods like this won't ever happen again!

I hope your family is ok. Basically if they are anywhere in the east of Australia, there's a risk of flooding at this point. It's pretty fraking scary.

So... the size of Texas; of France and Germany combined; four times the land that Hurricane Katrina affected. *shrugs* Yeah... I dunno how accurate it is. All I know is 75% of Queensland PLUS northern New South Wales, bits of Victoria, the north of Tassie now. It's a bit damp.

Well, it's only 36 years since the last time this happened as the news never stop reminding us. Bigger than Ben Hur now though. My twitter feed ( @Jaydeyn) has oodles of pictures and info retweeted if you want to follow those links.

Thanks for the link, I'll check those out.

As far as I know, my family's fine. I tend to assume that until I hear otherwise! But we're basically all Sydneysiders, and I haven't picked up anything about Sydney being affected. So unless they're getting *themselves* in trouble (not out of the question), no worries yet.

My mind has been on you guys so much the last couple of days. The videos I've seen have just boggled me. I can't believe this isn't getting much coverage in our news. People I talk to just don't have any idea of the scope (or any idea period, apparently you guys haven't lost enough LIVES to gain our attention :P).

I HATE when politicians take a tragedy and try to use it to forward their agenda.

Yeah, at least you don't live in Haiti *cough*orneworleans*cough*

Lovely. Yeesh. There are still 50 peope missing from the flash flooding area. Think that'll do it? I hope there's coverage of Brazil and Sri Lanka in that case. They got hit nastily and without the facilities and organisational services swinging into hardcore action to get their backs. Their footage is horrific. :(
