The first thing he felt was uncomfortably warm wool scratching his chin. Gradually, as consciousness returned, he noticed the lumpy mattress cramping his spine.

He opened his eyes and blinked rapidly at the sunlight flooding the room, no, closet, surrounding him.

Wincing, he gingerly sat up to peer out the window.

Beneath him stretched Muggle London, a dazzling jewel of unfamiliar people, buildings, and contraptions.

A surprisingly giddy smile spread across his face.

The challenge of adaptation was no matter.

For now, it was enough to know that he had escaped the war with his life.

He was finally free.

It is his third day of freedom, and Blaise has no wand to cast a Cleaning Charm.

Swallowing his pride, he clatters down the stairs in search of the kind, old Muggle woman he is renting from.

She stands humming in the kitchen, wielding culinary magic with a wooden spoon.

“Where is the bathroom?”

“Down the corridor, dear,” she smiles cheerfully.

He ventures down the hall and finds the room. Ignoring the odd gadgets within, he sees the small glass cubicle.

Unlike the tub at home...

Blaise unthinkingly turns the knob labeled ‘H,’ and is promptly scalded with hot water.

His days blend into each other until they stretch seamlessly.

He walks the streets, hands stuffed in the pockets of last year’s trousers, and observes the Muggles.

They are a grey, bitter people in a lifeless land, trapped in dreary lives and caged in grey vehicles.

They spare no sympathy for the stranger amongst them, parting their narrow formations and demanding a path of his own.

When the skies open up and shower them with confusion, they calmly pop open their umbrellas.

Blaise, instead, shivers under last month’s pullover and wishes he had a wand to cast an Impervius Charm.

Title: Part IV: Coffee

Characters: Blaise Zabini
Rating: Everyone
Prompt: Muggle Relations

The glass door of the shop swings open with the ringing of a bell and whoosh of air.

The people within are mostly bespectacled, speaking in hushed tones as faint strains of music float in the air above them, mixing with the heady scent of coffee.

Stepping nimbly past the disordered tables and couches, he arrives at the counter, and opens his mouth to order.

The smiling cashier before him has the same hazel eyes of his late mother.

He stops running when he reaches his room. Curling himself into a ball, he gulps in air and fights his tears.
