Just weird that both are recently married and I'm friends with both their wives. I feel like I'd be home more if I were in their shoes, but what do I know?

Dude, I was playing POKER! POKER! I mean, on the list of reasons you'd forgive one for missing your calls, there's (1) death/dismemberment (2) being chased by bears or other wild animals (3) "doin' it" and (4) poker game.

Alcohol. Guitars. Smugly accepting that I'm ridiculously overcompensated.
Seriously, the drag gets more bearable and the work gets better, but as long as the billable hour remains, it's going to suck. I'm surprised that litigation at a mid-size firm isn't treating you well. I'll stop being envious.
Honestly, my job is a lot better than the last one, but I think that the stultifying nature of its predecessor lowered my expectations.

Thanks.
It's a mid-sized firm by mega firm standards, but there are still 120 lawyers in the office and they pay NYC rates. I had hoped it was going to be a lifestyle firm with big firm perks. My hopes were misplaced.
I find myself incredibly envious of the staff. I sometimes think that I'd happily take the lower salary and ability to leave at 6 if I wasn't shackled by my law school debt.

I don't know that "lifestyle firms" actually exist. I've got colleagues who have worked at other big firms, mid-size firms and boutiques. The response has been typically the same across the board; it all kind of sucks. The boutique firm people especially have found it to be unbearable (fewer people to bear the work load). Even those who went to relatively big firms with 1700-1800 billable requirements said that it wasn't much different than a 2000 hour shop.
Shit, now I feel worse. I'm also working with German counsel trying to close a deal right now. Ah, the exciting life of the international lawyer.
