The science of bursting into songs

After weeks of hard work and a horrible headache and driving classes and a bachelorette party, I finally got to watch the infamous musical episode of Grey's Anatomy.

Song Beneath the Song Beneath the Song... )

Sadly, it didn't sound like Callie singing, just like Sara Ramirez singing. THIS!!

This was exactly my thought. It was like Shonda went, well, Sara can sing so let's make a musical episode where Callie's brain switches to singing hallucination mode when it's concussed/injured. If Callie was a singer, or at least had been shown to be at all interested in singing through out the previous 5 seasons that she's been in, then it might have made more sense. But in the end it was just like a badly drawn line from Sara to singing to Callie that didn't really make any sense and it only emphasised the point that this was a complete gimmick (imo ( ... )

For me it's something more simple than that. It's the fact that Sara Ramirez has a very different voice when she's singing than when she acts like Callie. That's sadly because she IS a good singer. The other actors don't have that problem because they can't change their voices to sing, which makes them sound not as good, but at least they sound like "themselves" (as in, the characters)

As for Mark's comment, I still get it because I see it as saying something stupid at the heat of the moment and not something he really believes or has given any thought on. It's a horrible, disgusting thing to say, but at the time he was going for taking it out on Arizona instead of making any real sense. He wanted Callie to live, so whatever "but" Arizona was given him needed to get answered quickly to shut her up. I'm guessing Arizona wasn't completely out of shock and guilt to punch him like he deserved, but I'm glad she defended herself just the same by screaming back.

Once More With Feelings is one of my favorites episodes of Buffy ever (The 6th season was my fav all around, I think) AND I think it was very well done. I rather make the comparison with Scrubs, though, because it has lots of similarities with Grey's (it started with a group of interns going through the ups and downs of becoming doctors, it had lots of in-hospital relationships, it starts and ends with a narration made by the protagonist, sometimes that narration is done by the other characters on special episodes, it had interesting patients, and while mostly a funny show, it had very intense angsty moments), even the fact that a musical came to life in the show because it was happening in the head of a patient, it was done by Scrubs first!!

Case in point:
I just keep thinking of all those shows that had musicals incorporated in their stories. It CAN be done, damn it! With Grey's it didn't work because they take themselves way too seriously over things that make little sense and shouldn't be taken seriously and they weren't serious ( ... )

I wonder if Shonda ever got help from a musicals producer or a director? OK, she didn't want a typical musical (except for when she did want it as is showed with Running on Sunshine). Still, you need help from someone who knows how to tell a story through songs and they certainly didn't have someone to do that ( ... )

xD LOLOL! I can imagine that GA episode being a disaster. I liked the Scrubs musical episode a lot, though. My favourite is "Guy love". xD
