Hey, did you hear that poor people choose to be poor but are secretly living an amazing life with their flat screen televisions, iPhones, Playstations and twenty-six room mansions?

You wouldn't believe how many people in Maine are on welfare and yet have luxury items like that.

Some folks on welfare have them out here too. But one, it's not as widespread as the GOP would have us believe and two, a lot of these folks with the luxury items had them before they lost their jobs and were forced onto welfare... that point seems to get lost in a lot of the rhetoric, sadly enough.

YES. THANK YOU.

When my husband got laid off, we went from being two people making more than $120K to a family of four (hello twins, two weeks after the layoff) making $40K. He drove his Mercedes. Why? It was paid off, and trading it in would cost us more money than keeping a reliable car that cost us nothing. Showing up to get WIC for my babies in a Mercedes for the six months that shit was really bad earned me a lot of judgement.

You just...you never know.

I don't think that's a problem.

I feel for you, having to cope with those sort of statement on a regular basis. When I have to transcribe cable news shows where misstatements like the ones above are spouted, I want to insert naughty things into the transcript, just to get back at them. Don't worry, I won't do it, but it doesn't stop me thinking about it.

So true. I've felt for the past few years that the internet is the great enabler, because it's so easy to share. There are so many dumbass things said and repeated that people wouldn't pass on if they had to walk their ass down to the photocopier and mail them individually to their friends.
